Hi All.......is there ever any circumstance where a military member that has a spouse and 2 dependants would get a 4 bedroom home on base, or is that out of the question?  Moving to Atsugi in Sept/Oct and have never lived in base housing before and just trying to get a feel for what to expect.
    Thanks!

You get what you are entitled for, which would be a 3 bedroom and possibly a 2 bedroom depending on the age and gender of your children (but they usually go for the 3). You can opt to take less rooms than you are allowed, but it would be VERY unfair for them to let you have an extra room, and I could only imagine the complaining... I got a 4bdroom, b/c I have 3 kids. You could always look for a home off base! I've seen quite a few 4 bedroom Japanese homes!

Oh, I forgot... I have HEARD that certain higher ranking people get an extra room...but that could just be 2 bed room instead of one for couples without children...??? So you might want to check that out. Adam should have the housing section going pretty soon, and I'm sure you can be able to find all the info you need. I don't know the specifics of Atsugi, since I live in Ikego... Best of Luck

We have 1 child and a 3 bedroom and a friend has NO children and a 3 bedroom. I think it depends on what's available. Also, the house next door has 2 beds, and the guy was only an E-5 with NO children.(all stand alone homes-NOT townhouses) So, while rank is taken into consideration to a point, in Negishi that is not always the deciding factor.

I have to edit that--with more people coming into Negishi than when we first got here,(half the houses were empty) rank may be more of a deciding factor.

On Atsugi you'll be assigned what you are entitled, no more.

I would LOVE to see some pictures of Atsugi housing (other than the pics thru the CNIC website) if anyone has any to share!

I think rank has a whole lot to do with it...and even if there is lots of housing available at the moment, I doubt you will get more bedrooms than you are legally entitled to, on base, simply because in the future, if housing is full, someone is sure to point at you and whine "how come THEY get more bedrooms?"

If you are E-6 or below, with no children or one child, you are entitled to a 2-bedroom. E-6 or below with two kids gets a 3-bedroom. E-7 or above with no children or one child gets a 3-bedroom (though they can opt for a 2-bedroom if the waiting list is long for a 3-bedroom). I don't know if an E-7 or above with a spouse and two kids is entitled to a 4-bedroom, but I would assume so? My friend's family had a four bedroom and only two children (teenage boys) -- but he was a Captain and the CO of a ship.
